Halloween

Hi! One of the doctors I worked with yesterday asked me what did I remember about Trick or Treating when I was growing up. Actually, I did not have one memory of Halloween. Do any of you? I know I am "Older than Dirt", but surely we had Halloween back in the old days.

That is a good question. My memories of trick or treating are so vague,

We didn't have store bought costumes, just masks. I always wanted to a princess and dressed up in some of Momma's clothes.

I think we just went trick or treating on the street where we lived. We always had so many kids coming to our door because we were on the main drag.

I do remember one "trick". If you didn't get a treat you got "tricked". I'm not sure if we ran out of candy or if my parents thought the boys were too old, but Jackie Smith and some other kids threw a glider off of our front porch. Daddy chased them down the street and made them put the glider back. They were all about twice Daddy's size. But that was when kids were mischievous not bad.

Margaret, thank you for stirring up some old memories.

Yes, I remember going to a party at Hanna Schwartz's house. It was so scary...one room was decorated and a witch was sitting in a rocking chair. There were other scary things...just can't remember.
Marg, Barbara will probably remember this.
I dressed-up like a Gypsy. Probably some of Mama's clothes and I remember wearing one big hoop earring. Lots of fun.

I also have memories of Halloween..
One night Fran dresses up in Mrs. Fannie Dean's clothes, shoes, I in
Mom's clothes, shoes.. Dad was alone at home giving out candy, while we were trick or treating.. He gave out all the candy Mom had there for the kids, so he started giving out our comic books, ran out of that and then started giving out nickles and pennies to all the kids.. We always had so many trick or treaters to come by..

One year I remember somebody put our picnic table out in the middle of the raad.. The same year they turned on all the water faucets in the neighbor-hood...

Like Renee said, we never had costumes, we just dressed up in what-ever we could find... I remember one year Fran and I were
Hobo's.....Those were the good old
days....

Thanks for reviving a few memories for me of Halloween. I vaguely remember egging houses.....not me, of course, but some mischievious little group of kids did.

I actually dreamed last night of being back in my little house in Kentwood and some of you came over. We were digging in my little closet looking for costumes. Oh, the things we found!!! I wish I could take a picture of my imagination!

Is it my imagination, or was it much colder back then? It seems like I remember always having to bundle up to go trick or treating and even to the football games. Here it is November, 500 miles north of Louisiana and it is 80 degrees outside!

Renee,
It is not your imagination. I was thinking the same thing just the other day. I remember wearing long-johns to the football games.

We have been having wonderful weather..high 60's during the day, just perfect!

About Holloween, I lived in N.O. and my mom would take us around the neighborhood. We also dressed with things we had, and stayed in our own neighborhoods. The police had to block off Keiths neighborhood because so many kids were being dropped off there to treat or treat. He is really getting out of hand with cars riding with the kids thru the neighborhoods. I like have our festival at church to keep the kids safe. Glad you brought it up Renee. Good hearing from everyone.
