Grandparents

Since my daughter and her husband are both teachers and now live close to us, my granddaughters spent Sunday night with us and we kept them on Monday while the parents had inservice day at school. Caroline asked if her little friend could come with her, too. Of course, I said yes! While I was gathering snacks for them, I started thinking and boy, did this bring back some good memories!
How many times did we go with each other to our grandmother's houses when we were growing up? Many times, Sandra invited me to her grandmother's house in........was it Independence? And Bettye, I went many times with you to visit yours it seems out from McComb. EJ, many times I went with you to Chesbrough. Since Charl's grandmother was my aunt, I lived at her house practically. Ma Hattie was my grandmother and Charleen's great grandmother and lived only a block away from Bettye. We used to sit on Ma Hattie's front porch and listen to the Church of Christ worship service because they were just across the street and so loud! These are just a few of the grandmothers I remember, but I'm sure I visited others, too. Does this bring anything to your mind?

Margaret,
I so remember Ma Hattie. And, as you recall, my dad's mother lived next door to us. There was always a swing on the front porch. My mother's
mother lived in Chesbrough and it seemed like it took two hours to get to her house, even though it was only 12 miles away. She lived the last 13 years of her life with us.
I do recall going with Sandra to her grandmother's house. I think it was in Springfield. Janice or Bettye, do ya'll recall where she lived?

EJ, of course, now I remember Nana (was that her name)? Or was it Nan Naw?

Hilda, did you grandmother live with y'all? I vaguely remember that.

My grandmother also lived with us a while before she died. But she spent time with all the kids.

Margaret, her name was NanNaw...
She died in 1958 and was the most important person in my life.
It was a hard adjustment after she died. We spent so much family time at her house...every day. I was with her the night she died and remember going to our house to wake up Mama and Daddy. I was 14 and remember the funeral almost like it was yesterday.
Even down to what I wore.

Margaret, my Grandma Carter did live with us for a while. In fact she and I flew to Oregon together when we moved out there. I miss seeing the house on the corner when I go to Kentwood now. Anyone know what they plan to put there?

Hilda,
I'm not sure but at one time I heard they may put a Waffle House. Who knows. Prior to it being sold, the bank wanted it. We sold Mama's house to my brother, then he sold it to someone else, then the bank acquired it. They really wanted both lots but my cousin who owned my grandmothers property did not want to sell it to them for what they wanted to pay. When all the talk of a Nascar Racetrack being built in Kentwood began, someone offered her more than she was asking so of course she sold it immediately. With the economy being so bad, I don't think any thing will be built any time soon. I could be wrong. Time will tell.

EJ, I remember going to both of your grandmother's houses. I remember spending the night at NanNaw's and Delores was there and told us about the birds and the bees. I was horrified! It seems like there was someone else with us.

I also remember going out to your aunts house in Spring Creek. Was it Aunt Betty? And the many trips to see your aunt in Baton Rouge.

My mother's mother died when I was 10 months old , so I never knew her. And Daddy's mother wasn't the grandmotherly type. But the Deckers next door made up for it. Especially Mattie and Nell. They were wonderful to me.
